May 18: Day at the Museum                     (Museum of Revolution) !

The Museum of Revolution allowed us to really understand the intimate details of the Cuban revolution. There were displays that highlighted not only those who fought in the revolution, but also supporters of the revolution as well. This was a really educational experience because we were able to deepen our understanding of prominent leaders in Cuban history.

El Museo de la Revolución is centrally located in Old Havana. In the years following the Revolution, the Communist government filled the former Presidential Palace, full of extravagant neo-classical architecture and Tiffany & Co. designs, with artifacts from the Revolution. The stark contrast between the marble staircases and the less aristocratic appearances of the revolutionaries (as seen to the left and above) seems intentional, as if the palace was the final step in gaining control of the island. Filled with blood-stained uniforms and bullet shells from the fights, the message the Revolutionary government hopes to portray is clear: the Revolution was won through a battle against the old regime, which is referred to as nothing but the "tyranny" throughout the museum. Including such objects as the comb used by Castro during his time in exile to a life-size model of Che walking through the jungle, the museum offers a unique perspective of the Revolution through the eyes of the Revolutionaries themselves.
